Since grime’s rapid rise to international status during the mid-2010s, most of us probably don’t remember experiencing a Skepta DJ set but that all changed last week for those lucky enough to be at the closing parties at Ibiza’s DC-10.

Grime sensation and British icon – Skepta put on an energetic DJ set at Ibiza’s DC-10 Circoloco event and paid homage to his good friend Virgil Abloh, for a famous island-shaking event.

Birthed during the 90s, DC-10 started as a music bar with a capacity of 80 people, it’s now evolved into a venue with a capacity of 4000 and hosts some of the biggest DJ’s such as Michael Bibi, Virgil Abloh has performed there and now following in his footsteps, Skepta.

Some will be familiar with Skepta’s origins as a DJ and producer for his younger brother JME and grime collective – Meridian Crew. This was before his stellar career in grime kicked off in the mid 2000s and resulted in Skepta becoming one of the UK’s most beloved MCs.

Since then, Skepta has become more than an MC legend. His blossoming friendship with Virgil Abloh over the 5 years before his untimely death, played a pivotal role in maintaining success in fashion and as a cross-cultural icon.

Skepta has referenced his good friend Virgil countless times and shared their common interests of global fashion and music. His Circoloco DJ performance was another celebratory moment for this friendship.

Skepta stayed honouring Virgil in the build up to his set as he wrote in an Instagram caption promoting the performance: “I know you can see this Virgil Abloh, haha. Full circle” and “Long live Virgil Abloh.”

Not only was he an established designer and creator, but Virgil Abloh was also a recognised DJ, who had performed sets at Tomorrowland, Hï Ibiza and Circoloco.

It was a surprise to see Skepta’s name on a headlining spot for an Ibiza event that typically sticks to house and techno – even more so to see that Skepta’s set consists of mostly these genres.

This is the same man that once rapped: “I used to wear LV but put it all in the bin ’cause that’s not me”, before Virgil took the reigns as artistic director of Louis Vuitton and brought Skepta into the fold.

The event-turned-lifestyle brand Circoloco, has previously collaborated with Adidas to craft some exclusive Forum Lows and they’ve also worked with Virgil Abloh before 2018, launching several collaborative merch collections through Off-White.

Nobody expected seeing Skepta behind the decks again, and if we did, we would of expected a grime or drill set. However, there’s no denying we’re not happy to see Skepta celebrating his DJ routes and celebrating the incredible life of Virgil Abloh.
