From humble beginnings as a DJ/producer, to internationally recognised icon status as a grime MC, a model, designer and now a painter – Skepta has made it clear that the culture is about more than just music and he’s proved that with his latest endeavor as a painter.
Skepta disappointed fans earlier this year when he announced that after the release of his ‘All In’ project in July, Skep would be shifting his musical focus towards production and that any verses we hear from him now aren’t new.
This only means that new windows of opportunity are going to open for Skepta and his lengthy list of accolades will grow as his next step in his journey sees him walk a new medium – introducing himself into the artistic sphere.
He’s been enjoying himself behind the decks in Ibiza, now Skepta’s still enjoying himself, only through a very different medium.
During lockdown, when many artists had to take a step back as they weren’t allowed to step out on tour, Skepta used this time to explore his passion for art through painting.
Skepta explains: “For me, it’s about this beautiful thing of being able to look at a picture and feeling an emotion. If I look at an art piece and feel something, I fall in love with it.”
Skepta has now partnered with Sotheby’s London, an auction house founded in 1744 which focuses on fine/decorative arts and jewellery. Skepta will be co-curating the Contemporary Curated auction, in which he’s also a participating artists with his piece “Mama Goes to Market” (seen above).
The Contemporary Curated exhibition will take place at Sotheby’s London on New Bond Street during Thursday 8 September – Tuesday 13 September.
The next steps in Skepta’s ever-evolving journey will unfold at the Contemporary Curated exhibition, any guesses how much Skepta piece ‘Mama Goes to Market’ will sell for?
