Hummel, the kit manufacturer for the Denmark national football team, has revealed a monochrome kit for Denmark during the World Cup in protest against Qatar. They say they don’t want their branding to be visible during the World Cup because of Qatar’s human rights record.
Denmark have revealed their new kit for the approaching World Cup in Qatar and it sports a sponsor-less kit with nothing but the all-over colours of red for the home kit, white for away and black as their third kit.
Hummel have released in a statement that they have “toned down” its logo and “iconic chevrons” because “we don’t wish to be visible during a tournament that has cost thousands of people their lives.”
Hummel also explained that the new Danish kit is intended to send a dual message: “They are not only inspired by Euro 92, paying tribute to Denmark’s greatest football success, but also a protest against Qatar and its human rights record.”
Hummel made it clear they they still fully supportive of the Danish national team every step of the way, but this isn’t the same as supporting Qatar as a host nation.
Denmark also unveiled an all-black ‘colour of mourning’ third kit to pay tribute to the migrant workers who died during construction work for the tournament.
Last November, the Danish Football Association made a promise to wear clothing with critical messages at the Qatar tournament and we’re thinking this must be that message.
FIFA’s World Cup rules prohibit political statements on team kits but Denmark’s three shirts in all-red, white, and black display no words or symbols that are an explicit statement.
The typical standout features of Denmark’s football jersey has been the Hummel logo, decorative white chevrons and the national team badge since the 1980s, and now these features are faded into the same single colour as the jersey.
To raise more awareness and as part of an anti-discrimination campaign, The Danish federation have also joined the European campaign launched last week, pushing for captains to wear armbands with a rainbow design crafted into it, during the games.
If you’d wish to check out some more kits for the approaching Qatar World Cup, have a look at the new England kit collection they’ll be wearing during the tournament and also the new French kit collection – both designed by Nike.
