Nike was originally named Blue Ribbon Sports by founders Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight, when it first emerged in the sportswear industry in 1964. 1970 saw Bowerman develop the worlds first waffle sole, after experimenting with rubber, pouring it into his wife’s waffle maker to create the textured material. Blue Ribbon Sports changed its name to Nike in 1971, which it is still known as today. The iconic Nike Swoosh logo was created by Carolyn Davidson for just $35 that same year. The first version of the waffle racer shoe debuted one year later, sporting the Swoosh on the side of the design. The same year, the iconic Nike Cortez was released during the Mexico Olympics, it was the first shoe to feature foam cushioning to add extra comfort for the wearers. The Nike Blazer released in 1973, sported by NBA player George Gervin which gained them a huge amount of attention within the basketball industry. Over the next decade, the brand released numerous silhouettes including the Nike Tailwind, Air Force 1, Internationalist, Air Pegasus and of course the Air Jordan 1. Nike is now known to be one of the most recognizable, successful sportswear brands, overtaking the industry with its developing footwear designs and innovative technology, including the Air Max technology which is popularly worn on the high street and for sports performance enhancement.
