40 years ago in 1982, Italian designer Massimo Osti, took his passion of fabric research and began crafting unique jackets using the fabric he called Tella Stella. Osti called this brand Stone Island, but it wasn’t until he teamed Carlo Rivetti joined brand when real history began to be made.

A 25-year-old Carlo Rivetti was a visionary, who had already seen the change in the way men dressed, wanting to ditch the suits in preference of more casual clothing.

Rivetti was looking for a brand that reflected this vision and after Osti showed him the very first Stone Island collection, Stone Island began to make a name for itself.

Carlo Rivetti took Stone Island from a brand, into a laboratory of experimental ideas. To this day, Rivetti has helped Stone Island craft 60,000 unique dyeing recipes in its colour library.

Starting at the Spring/Summer 1987 collection, Carlo Rivetti has identified some Stone Island pieces over the last 40 years that he considers the holy grail of their collections. This unique variety of Stone Island pieces can be found below, starting in SS 1987 all the way through to the recent FW 22/23 collection.

From the anchor jacket of SS 1987, the grey puffer jacket of the FW 1999 collection to the pink and white tie dyed jacket from SS 2017 – there’s no surprise these pieces have been picked out as some of the most stand out Stone Island pieces since its founding 40 years ago.

In my opinion, the best part about seeing all of these iconic Stone Island pieces through the years, is that you can really see that Carlo Rivetti was a visionary and a futurist.

Any of these pieces dating back to 1987 could of been released today and it would still fit nicely into the rest of the collection as a standout modern day piece of clothing.

During Rivetti and Stone Island‘s pursuit of innovation, garments have been made using some of the most advanced fabrics such as Kevlar, Dyneema, and Primaloft.

By putting experimentation at the core since its founding 40 years ago and using the most advanced technologies available, nobody designs clothing the way Stone Island and Carlo Rivetti have done for years.
