Originally founded as the Van Doren Rubber Company by Paul and Jim Van Doren along with partners Gordon Lee and Serge Delia, the company now known as Vans first started out manufacturing shoes and selling them on the premises – a unique concept for the footwear industry which make it stand out from the crowd. During the earlier years of the business, the Vans #44 were born and regularly purchased on site by customers. The brand was soon seen worn by skateboarders, known for the rugged make up of the shoe and sticky sole, perfect for gripping the board. By the end of the 70’s, the brand had over 70 stores in California and also sold through retailers both nationally and internationally. In the 80’s, the brand began to create more footwear for a wider variety of sports including baseball, basketball and even skydiving. Vans went through a huge expansion in the early 90’s, and in the year of 1998, they saw their very own indoor skate park, sizing at 46,000 square feet, based in Orange County. Today, Vans continue their unique identity within the footwear industry, popular with not only skateboarders and sporting fanatics, but fashion fanatics too.
