Patagonia is known to specialise in technical, outdoor clothing, which is becoming more popular following the streetwear movement and techwear trends within the fashion industry. The label is often seen stocked by high street retailers including Size? And The Hip Store. Founded in 1973 by Yvon Chouinard, a man who loved the adventures of the great outdoors and spent many a weekend climbing with friends or family. After seeking a gap in the market for affordable, quality outdoor equipment, Chouinard set himself a mission at just 19 years old to create some himself. After partnering with aeronautical engineer Tom Frost, Chouinard Equipment was born. After the development of their initial climbing products to create pieces which were more environmentally friendly, the brand began its own line of apparel. Around the late 60’s/early 70’s, the brand changed their name to Patagonia, inspired by the mountainous region in South America. The company released one of their first jackets, inspired by fisherman attire, in 1977. They are now well known for a variety of versatile outdoor apparel and are one of the most popular brands for outdoor wear on the high street against other high street labels such as Nike ACG.
