Leeds Brand MKI Dropped An Exclusive Pop-Up: Harvey Nichols Manchester Takeover

Leeds-based cult fashion label MKI Miyuki Zoku made a stylish debut in Manchester last month, setting up an exclusive pop-up concept store at Harvey Nichols. The event, which launched on August 21st, showcased the label’s Spring/Summer 2024 collection, including a special capsule of pieces available only at Harvey Nichols.

The pop-up was meticulously designed to reflect the aesthetic of MKI’s flagship store in Leeds. Shoppers were treated to a visually striking space featuring a sleek, monochrome color palette, signature lighting that enhanced the overall atmosphere, and splashes of greenery that added a fresh, vibrant touch. This carefully curated environment provided the perfect backdrop to highlight MKI’s latest collection and the exclusive pieces created for Harvey Nichols.

Founded in 2010 by designer Vik Tailor, MKI Miyuki Zoku takes its name and inspiration from a renowned Japanese youth tribe of the 1960s. The Miyuki Zoku were a group of stylish young rebels who gathered around Miyuki-dori Street in Ginza, Tokyo, known for their Ivy League, preppy streetwear style—a look that was both innovative and controversial at the time.

MKI has successfully captured the spirit of this maverick subculture, translating it into a distinctive aesthetic that has earned the brand a place in high-end retailers like END, Flannels, Bloomingdales, and Harvey Nichols stores in Birmingham, Bristol, and Dublin.

Reflecting on the brand’s philosophy, Vik Tailor shared, “The ethos behind the brand is to produce premium, luxury essentials at a much more modest price point. We focus heavily on fabrics—we source them in Paris, visiting two or three times a year. For the Harvey Nichols exclusives, we reimagined many of our core styles in a range of pigment-dyed colors exclusive to Harvey Nics.”

For Tailor, the real reward comes from seeing customers embrace MKI’s designs. “The biggest thrill for us is still seeing the customers wearing the product. It’s the same feeling we got when we put that first piece of MKI out there,” he said.

Manchester’s fashion enthusiasts had the chance to explore MKI’s latest offerings in this unique pop-up experience, which truly embodied the brand’s signature style.
