There’s something special about independent retailers that chain stores simply can’t replicate. The individuality, the personal touch, and the unmistakable sense of uniqueness all come together to create an experience that feels truly tailored. One such place is Pockets, one of the last few British menswear independents still standing, nestled in the heart of Shrewsbury. Established in 1996, this family-owned business has built a strong reputation for offering high-quality menswear and exceptional customer service, making it a beloved fixture in the town.
With the decline of independent retailers over the years, stepping into Pockets feels like stepping into a bastion of British menswear heritage. Many stores like it have closed their doors in recent years due to changing consumer habits, rising rents, and the dominance of large, faceless chains. Pockets, however, has weathered these storms, carving out a space for itself as a fashion destination that still values the art of personal connection
Pockets may have started small, but its story is one of growth, passion, and family dedication. Founded by Paul Platt, the store began in a modest building in Shrewsbury and has since expanded, taking over more of the space as the years went by. Today, it stands as a flagship store, serving as the heart of a four-store chain that spans the UK. Branches in Hanley, Newcastle, and Nantwich complement the original Shrewsbury location, each retaining that same family-run charm and commitment to quality.
On my recent visit, Mark, Store Manager of the Shrewsbury store and long standing team member, gave me a personal tour, sharing stories about the store’s humble beginnings and how they’ve managed to not only survive but thrive in such a competitive industry. It’s no small feat to maintain a family business for nearly three decades, especially in fashion, where trends come and go. Yet, Pockets has stood firm, proving that there is still a place for independent menswear retailers in today’s fast-paced retail world if you can get the formula right, but that’s no easy task to say the least.
From the outside, Pockets looks like a regular menswear store, but once inside, it’s clear that this is no ordinary shopping experience. As soon as you step through the doors, you’re greeted by a warm and inviting atmosphere that feels both intimate and expansive at the same time. Each section of the store is carefully curated, offering a distinct feel, with displays showcasing both classic staples and cutting-edge fashion. Like a maze, the ever-growing expansion of the store becomes increasingly apparent as you wander through its various sections, each offering its own unique style and atmosphere. The building itself, a former law firm, exudes a distinctly English charm that makes you feel as though it could easily be over 150 years old (Pockets still has many of the law books that the firm used on the shelves of one of the main rooms). This sense of history is heightened by the many buildings in the city centre, which date back to the 16th and 17th centuries, showcasing the rich architectural heritage of the area and adding to its captivating allure.
Mark explained how the layout of the store is deliberately designed to guide customers on a journey. Rather than being overwhelmed by a chaotic array of clothing, visitors can navigate through clearly defined areas, each dedicated to a specific brand or style. This thoughtful curation ensures that shopping at Pockets feels more like an exploration of style rather than a simple retail transaction.

During my visit, one of the brands prominently featured was Canada Goose, with their winter collection beautifully showcased. A sleek, slate-grey parka immediately caught my eye, exemplifying the brand’s commitment to style and functionality. Mark pointed out how they regularly rotate their displays to keep things fresh, ensuring that customers always have something new to discover. In addition to Canada Goose, I also spotted pieces from Thom Browne and Acne Studios, as well as the trainer specialist Autry, renowned for their contemprary styles. To complete the offering, the British heritage accessory brand Smythson was also present, adding a touch of sophistication and quality to the selection.
One of the key selling points of Pockets is its commitment to showcasing British heritage brands. With British fashion being world-renowned for its craftsmanship and timeless appeal, Pockets takes great pride in stocking iconic names that have helped shape menswear over the years. One of the standout brands in their collection is Belstaff, a label synonymous with high-quality outerwear and a rich history of adventure and innovation.
As we walked through the Belstaff section, Mark highlighted their classic Paxton Puffers and Corduroy overshirts jackets, two pieces that have been beloved by customers. The timelessness of these designs is what makes them so popular, and their durability ensures that they’ll be worn for years to come. Pockets’ selection of British brands doesn’t stop there, with other household names like Mulberry, Tods, Crocket Jones and John Smedley, to name a few, also gracing the shelves.
While Pockets is rooted in British tradition, they also keep a keen eye on modern trends, ensuring that their offerings cater to a wide range of tastes. The mix of tradition and innovation is what makes Pockets such a compelling destination. In addition to classic British brands, they also stock high-fashion names like Stone Island and CP Company, catering to those who want a more contemporary, urban edge to their wardrobe. These brands have become symbols of cutting-edge streetwear, and their presence in Pockets shows that the store is anything but stuck in the past.
One of the things that sets Pockets apart from other stores is its commitment to creating a holistic shopping experience. It’s not just about the clothes – it’s about engaging all the senses. One of the most surprising features of the store is their partnership with Aesop, the luxury skincare brand. As you walk past the Aesop display, you can smell the subtle, sophisticated scents of their lotions and soaps, adding a new dimension to the shopping experience.
Mark proudly showed me their in-store Aesop corner, which is more than just a display – it’s a mini-shop within a shop. This attention to detail and willingness to diversify the customer experience is what makes Pockets stand out from the crowd. While many retailers are content with just selling clothes, Pockets is all about creating a lifestyle, making it a one-stop-shop for the modern man who values quality in all aspects of life.
As our tour continued, we discussed the importance of personal service in retail. One of the things that has helped Pockets stand the test of time is its emphasis on creating relationships with customers. Mark explained how they offer personal shopping experiences, something that is becoming increasingly rare in today’s fast-paced retail world. Whether it’s a customer looking for the perfect suit for an event or someone needing a full wardrobe refresh, Pockets prides itself on offering a bespoke service that caters to individual needs.
This personal touch is what has helped Pockets build a loyal customer base. In a time where many stores are cutting back on service to save costs, Pockets continues to invest in its staff and the customer experience, making sure that everyone who walks through their doors feels valued and appreciated.
As I wrapped up my visit, it became clear that Pockets is more than just a store – it’s a community hub, a place where people come not only to shop but to engage in conversations about fashion, life, and everything in between. In a world where big chains dominate the high street, it’s independent retailers like Pockets that add character and diversity to our shopping experiences.
The rise of eCommerce and fast fashion has put immense pressure on independent stores, but Pockets has shown that it is possible to thrive by offering something different – a personal touch, a commitment to quality, and a curated selection that speaks to a discerning customer base.
Supporting independents is more important now than ever before. These small businesses are the lifeblood of our local economies, and they offer a shopping experience that simply can’t be replicated by larger chains. By visiting stores like Pockets, we help preserve a part of our retail heritage while also investing in the future of our high streets.
