Exploring the Stone Island Collection of Matt: A Visit to Stoke, Staffordshire

In this video, the team visits Pockets store to view a Stone Island collection curated by a dedicated collector, Matt. He showcases a range of jackets, including rare and modern pieces, some of which are quite unique.

Matt explains how he started collecting Stone Island around the age of 15-16, drawn to the brand because it wasn’t widely worn at the time. However, when the brand became more mainstream, he sold many of his older pieces, including old-school jackets. After some time, he regretted parting with them and decided to focus on acquiring rarer, more unique pieces.

The collection was arranged in a rough chronological order, with some standout items like the Formula Steel D-Ring jacket, which Matt recently reacquired. He also shares the story of his first Stone Island sweater, which he bought from a friend of his ex-girlfriend.

Matt discusses his long history with Pockets store, originally known as Review before Pockets took over, he then highlights the store’s deep knowledge and understanding of its customer base, which makes it stand out from other retail stores.

The video continues with a closer look at a Paul Harvey-designed fiber optic light jacket, a unique piece featuring LED lights. Matt explains how he carefully takes the batteries out of these jackets to prevent damage. He also showcases a summer version of the jacket, which is made from a different material and has a distinct lining. The condition of the jackets is noted to be excellent, with some pieces being acquired from fellow collectors.

This trip gave as some awesome insights and an in-depth look at the Stone Island collection and the passion behind Matt collecting these rare and iconic pieces.

A Passion for Unique Pieces

Matt’s collection is a testament to his deep appreciation for Stone Island’s commitment to innovation and design. As a serial collector, he’s not interested in just any piece – he seeks out rare, exclusive, and unique items that capture the essence of what Stone Island is all about. From reflective jackets to camo prints inspired by military history, Matt’s wardrobe is a curated showcase of some of the brand’s most coveted pieces.

One of the standout items in Matt’s collection is a reflective jacket, which he describes as a quintessential Stone Island piece. “This jacket is similar to a David-tc but it’s been finished with a dust treatment with the badge included, it’s a limited collaboration with a store in Moscow called Leform,” Matt explains. The jacket is designed with a unique features: there were only 49 of them made, a very rare piece”  he adds.

The Evolution of Stone Island

As Stone Island has grown in popularity, Matt has noticed a shift in the brand’s direction. While he still loves the brand, he’s become more selective about the pieces he adds to his collection. “As it’s become more mainstream, I want to find pieces that aren’t as common,” he says. “I’m looking for the rarer items, the ones that you won’t see everyone wearing.”

Matt believes that Stone Island is starting to return to its roots of producing special, exclusive pieces. “The last few years, it’s been a bit more mainstream, but I think they’re starting to bring back the rarer items again,” he says. “The Nano metal jacket they’ve just released is a great example of that.”

A Collector’s Journey

For Matt, collecting Stone Island is more than just about owning rare pieces – it’s about the journey and the stories behind each item. He’s built relationships with other collectors and retailers over the years in particular Pockets, were he’s been shopping for over 20 years, and they’ve been instrumental in helping him to acquire some of his collection. “I’ve been in touch with a few people who know what I’m looking for,” he shares. “When they find something rare, they reach out to me.”

And it’s not just about the clothes. Matt’s passion for the brand is rooted in the community and the shared appreciation for Stone Island’s commitment to craftsmanship and innovation. “Stone Island is more than just a brand – it’s a culture,” he says. “It’s about the details, the materials, and the stories behind each piece.”
