In response to consumers demanding for a more sustainable shopping experience, Selfridges has announced their ambitious plans for almost half of its transactions to be based on repair, resale, rental or refills by 2030.
Studies show that the sales of secondhand items rose by 240% in 2021, providing evidence for the desire for more sustainable conscious products.
Last year, Selfridges carried out 28,000 repairs, more than a third of which were pairs of trainers. The retailer also rented more than 2,000 items to customers and sold more than 8,000 refills.
Don’t hesitate to head over to Selfridges to browse their 3,000 brands, including: Stone Island, Palm Angels, Burberry and loads more.
Selfridges have explained that over 50% of their customers want to make more environmentally-conscious choices. This helped inspire their 2017 ‘Project Earth‘ collection, which in 2021 included over 1,200 of the retailers 3,000 brands and accounted for over 12% of all sales.
Brands requesting to be involved in the scheme need to meet nine different criteria’s, including being animal-friendly, vegan, reusable, and repairable.
Selfridges continues to aim for a greener future by committing to achieve an impressive net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.
Studies carried out by the World Economic Forum, has predicted that the fashion industry is responsible for an estimated 10% of humanity’s carbon emissions and carries the fifth largest carbon footprint of any industry.
Selfridges repair services will begin to be offered in the two Manchester stores and Birmingham store, while rental services will expand into new categories such as menswear, fine jewellery, accessories and childrenswear.
With secondhand services such as Depop and Vinted continuing to grow, the secondhand market can be expected to overtake fast fashion as early as 2030, according to reports.
Selfridges has taken a big responsibility in reinventing retail and making fast fashion more sustainable. It’s a movement that we hope inspires other retailers to change the negative effects fast fashion is having on the planet.
