What started off as a rollercoaster journey of ups and downs, over 10 years after its founding by Liam Gallagher, his former fashion brand ‘Pretty Green’ is now being revived.

Originally launched in 2009 in Manchester, the brand reached levels of success until it entered administration 10 years later, and thus began a whirlwind of a journey for the company.

The company which specialises in graphical shirts and T-shirts and a huge variety of different outerwear jackets and coats, was acquired by JD Sports in 2019, 10 years after its founding. Unfortunately, the former Oasis front man, Liam Gallagher has no involvement in the company.

As you can tell, a lot has happened to Liam Gallagher’s original Pretty Green company since 2009 and you can find a helpful yet simple description of the companies journey below.

A brief history
  • Pretty Green was founded by Liam Gallagher in 2009, was named after a track by The Jam and had its headquarters in Manchester.
  • Rockpool Investments backed the business with an £11 million investment in 2017.
  • Pretty Green took a hit when House of Fraser entered administration in August 2018 (immediately bought out of administration by Mike Ashley’s retail empire). House of Fraser had housed 20 Pretty Green concessions.
Administration
  • After being on the brink of insolvency for two weeks, the company fell into administration at the end of March 2019.
  • Moorfields Advisory were appointed as joint administrators of both Pretty Green Limited and holding company Pretty Green Group.
  • Administration came shortly after Pretty Green had appointed Moorfields Advisory to review strategic options for its future.
  • At the time of administration, Pretty Green had 12 standalone stores, 40 concessions and a wholesale business.
JD Sports
  • Pretty Green was bought out of administration by JD Sports on April 4, 2019, in a deal worth £3.3m.
  • JD Sports acquired Pretty Green’s business, brand, online and wholesale business and also its flagship store in Manchester.
  • The deal saved the jobs of 67 members of staff, yet the remaining 11 stores and the House of Fraser concessions ceased trading – affecting 97 employees.
Back on The Streets
  • In their efforts to expand, Pretty Green announced their plans to reopen a store in Manchester on September 2021 and the store opened in the following months.
  • The brand has recently opened a store in King Edward Street, Leeds, while it also has a store in Meadowhall, Sheffield.
Dissolution of the original businesses
  • Pretty Green Limited and Pretty Green Group are now to be dissolved as the administration process comes to an end.
  • £4.4m had been generated by Pretty Green Limited through selling off assets when the administration process began, while £1.2m of expenses had been stacked up.
  • The administration of both companies was scheduled to end on September 27, 2022.
  • Rockpool Investment’ indebtedness was an estimated amount of £6.3m when Pretty Green entered administration. Since then, it’s received just over £1m.

As of now, Liam Gallagher is yet to make a comment on the journey and current state of his former brand Pretty Green.

It’s looking like a positive restart for Pretty Green as the company will get another shot at thriving within the fashion industry only 3 years after falling into administration.
