Air Force 1s For £12? Not Quite, But ALDI’s New A1 Shoe Comes Close

ALDI, the popular discount supermarket chain and its latest footwear collection, the A1 trainer, is set to make its debut in the supermarket’s central aisle on August 23rd. Yet, it’s hard to ignore the distinct resemblance of its design to another famous silhouette, don’t you think?

According to the German supermarket’s official press release, ALDI’s A1 trainer has been labeled a “dupe,” and it’s arguably one of the most obvious imitations of the Nike Air Force 1 we’ve ever come across.

Every detail, from the ventilated upper to the chunky midsole, seems to reference the iconic Nike AF1 design. However, ALDI’s A1 shoe is missing any recognisable branding, resulting in a minimalistic design.

The real twist is in the price. While it’s difficult to get our hands on a brand new pair of AF1 trainers for less than £100 these days, ALDI’s A1 shoes will be available for just £12.

When it comes to imitating the AF1, Nike has consistently taken action. Back in January this year, the sportswear giant filled lawsuits against A Bathing Ape (BAPE) for how closely their Bape Sta shoe design allegedly imitates the AF1. After plenty of back-and-forth, come February and it’s believed Nike have dismissed the motion.

Another lawsuit was filed against designer John Geiger, alleging that his GF-01 trainer was taking advantage of the reputation of Nike and its iconic trainers. The matter was eventually resolved in a friendly manner after Geiger agreed to modify his GF-01 design.

Back to the A1, ALDI has a history of replicating popular silhouettes. Just last year, the German supermarket chain introduced its version of Crocs’ Clog for about only £4, at least a staggering £30 less than the original (seen above).

The main issue I’m having with the A1 is that ALDI may have missed a great opportunity to decorate their new design with their own twist or unique ALDI branding. Instead they opted for directly imitating the original design at a snippet of the price and quality.

Whether you want to purchase or not, be sure to keep your eyes peeled while going through ALDI’s famous middle aisle from Wednesday, 23 August!
