Celebrating 50 years of design and innovation – the Nike Waffle One is one of Nike’s most iconic trainers which helped them become arguably the biggest sports brand in the world today and its being re-envisioned with a fresh design.
Over 50 years ago in 1970, Nike co-founder, Bill Bowerman was experimenting by pouring rubber into his wife’s waffle iron and he created the very first waffle sole; an innovation that would change running shoes forever.
Proving that inventing is never over – the Waffle One is being re-envisioned with inspiration from the original “Moon Shoe” from 1972 and other iconic running looks.
Designed by artist Fabian Oefner, who creates colourful art in an effort to show the beauty of the natural world – the re-envisioned Waffle Ones are coming in three different sculptures and feature a springier midsole, improved traction and a soft suede upper.

When everyone in the world saw a waffle iron, Bowerman saw the designs for trainers that would remain a significant part of sport footwear for years to come.
In 1972 the first version of the Waffle Racer was released, nicknamed the ‘Moon Shoe’ and was handed out to athletes competing in the US Olympic trials. In 1974 the Nike Waffle Racer was released, using a sole inspired by Bill Bowerman’s original waffle idea. They became the best selling trainers on the market.
