You’ve probably heard ‘Rover’ on Tik Tok, maybe you’ve even joined in with the viral dance. The original single that premiered 15th November has had a reboot as artist S1mba has recently released a remix featuring different artists including Poundz, ZieiZie and Ivorian Doll.
S1mba’s breakthrough single went viral on Tik Tok, and it has completely dominated the platform for the #mulachallenge where people are uploading videos of themselves doing a 15 second dance to the chorus. Due to its success on Tik Tok, the track peaked at number 7 in the UK charts becoming S1mba’s first charting hit and it has 5.5 million YouTube views. However, despite the songs success it was written in only 20 minutes and S1mba explained “I don’t like thinking about it too much. I don’t like not having fun with it”. He supposedly uploaded the track before he went to Zimbabwe for Christmas not thinking much of it. When he eventually checked his phone, he realised that the quick track that he made just for fun had gone viral. S1mba had emails from major record labels and the song had been put on Spotify’s R&B playlists.
S1mba’s short career is already a success story. Growing up in Zimbabwe he has always loved music. He moved to the UK aged 9 where he learned the piano and went on to join a church band. S1mba said that he’s an open-minded listener, growing up listening to Zimbabwean music, afro-jazz and American R&B. And then when he moved to the UK he was exposed to grime and UK rap. Surprisingly, he also listens to EDM and Indie rock, taking inspiration from all his favourite genres. S1mba explained “I took my gospel influence, but I also listen to trap, I listen to hip-hop, I listen to grime. So, I infuse it together”.
The remix was released 11th May and seems to be headed towards similar numbers as the original track as it has almost 1 million views in just over a week. And just like the original single, Rover (remix) will definitely be one of the most popular summer bangers this year.
