Nike have once again collaborated with sacai in releasing the classic Nike sacai Waffle using the 2019 LDWaffle silhouette. This time, the brands have partnered with three labels which include fragment, CLOT and UNDERCOVER.
Collaborations are becoming huge in the world of sneakers – with the likes of the biggest names including Michael Jordan, Kanye West and Rick Owens getting involved in the industry over the past decade. Nike are hugely known for their innovative, fresh designs and well-known partners, and have of course become one of the most well-known sneaker brands (amongst sportswear and casual clothing) in the world.
The sacai LDWaffle will be released in three new designs by the end of this year, as part of the new collaborations. The project has been teased on social media, with a new poster which quotes “EXTRA HOT WAFFLES” and a retro looking advertisement, with images of each shoe set to release.
Every design within the project features the chunky waffle sole, alongside branding on the tongue and the back of the heel to represent the collaborations, however, every collaboration has it’s own unique style.
Each brand has created two to three colourways of their design. The first coming from CLOT – featuring a vibrant orange and red palette, and for the second pair, a more toned-down navy blue and grey, with hints of light sky blue. Each shoe features a mesh upper with a rubberized layer over the toe box, sides of the heel and for the iconic Nike Tick branding on both sides of the foot. Each of the heels also have a leather layer to give extra support, and both shoes are finished with a gum waffle sole.
Fragment have chosen a more minimal approach to the design. Featuring retro looking suede uppers, alongside contrasting leather detailing on each side with layered Nike Ticks. The first colourway comes in a navy and white colourway, and the second in a muted grey and white – these two are great options for anyone with a more understated style. Mesh panels also sit along the upper to create texture, and the tongue also features a clean white mesh to bring the shoes together. Each shoe features printed branding representing the Fragment x sacai collaboration, which sits on the lateral side of the foot.
Finally, the three designs from UNDERCOVER feature much bolder palettes. Each of the designs is unique looking, containing a mixture of around five different colours for each colourway. The first pair features mustard yellow, black, grey cream and white – a really cool option if you’re into vintage looking pieces. Second is a mixture of dark teal, red, grey, black and cream, which are a great option if you’re looking for a pair to transition with in between seasons. This time, the Nike Tick is highlighted in red and a creamy, off-white shade, which also features on the laces and sole of the design. Lastly, the third colourway features blue, dark purple, grey, cream and black. Out of the three, this final pair is the most unusual when it comes to colour combinations, but it really works. Each panel is made of a different colour and cleverly placed onto the upper to contrast every other panel. Leather features on every design across the front of the toe, on the heel, and surrounding the eyelets above the tongue. Every pair of laces comes in two tones which creates an interesting look across the top of the shoe.
The first of three drops, which will be the Nike x sacai x Fragment LDWaffle, is expected on August 24th.
