Nike SB And Grateful Dead Collaborate On This Collection

Nike SB are back again with another Dunk Low collection. This collection is inspired by 60’s rock band ‘’Grateful Dead’ and it consists of 3 colourways. With the orange colourway already sold out, you can get your hands on the green and the yellow colourways from the 24th July.

2020 has seen Nike go back to one of its most popular and long-lasting silhouettes again and again with the Dunk Low getting a number of new colourways and collaborations. Most recently successful collections have included the Team Tones collection as well as the Ben and Jerry’s collaboration.

This time round however, the design of this sneaker is heavily inspired by ‘Grateful Dead’, a band who have sold over 35 million albums worldwide. The band’s mascots of dancing bears first appear on the back cover of the group’s 1973 album, and the stylized bears were to pay homage to the bands producer who was nicknamed ‘Bear’. The much-loved symbol has become synonymous with the band and it is instantly recognisable as a part of ‘Grateful Dead’.

The bear theme features throughout the design as front and centre on the Nike SB is one of the dancing bears in the same colourway as the sneaker. The shoe playfully features bear-inspired detailing such as the faux fur textures and a suede upper. The Nike swoosh is frayed to mimic the bears collars and the utility style laces come in both colours used on the sneaker. The Nike SB Dunk Low also has a hidden zippered pocket on the tongue of the sneaker for a secret stash. And finally, another iconic ‘Grateful Dead’ logo is the ‘Steal Your Face’ skull which is printed on the underside of the sock liner!

Back in 2006, Nike SB did a similar collection when they released their ‘Three Bears’ pack which featured a Dunk High, Mid and Low iteration. This was the first time Nike added the furry upper to a shoe and it definitely made a statement. It’s clear to see that Nike took inspiration from their archives when designing the ‘Grateful Dead’ collection.

The Orange colourway (not pictured) was released on July 17th exclusively to a San Francisco skate shop ‘FTC’. The Yellow colourway will release on the 24th at SNKRS with the Green colourway available at select skate shops only. You are sure to make a statement in either the green or yellow colourway and paired with a casual outfit the shoes will really stand out.
