Ben Affleck’s new film “AIR“ is centered around Michael Jordan signing his deal with Nike and the creation of the very first Air Jordan 1 shoe, so I think it only feels right that the basketball legend was asked for his stamp of approval on the film.
During the film’s screening at South by Southwest (SXSW), AIR didn’t only receive a standing ovation but Affleck also revealed that Jordan made two special requests ahead of production.
Request one was that the film include Howard White, who was the Jordan Brand’s vice president at the time and will be played by Chris Tucker.
Request two was that Viola Davis is to play the person Jordan considers the most important of the story AIR is trying to tell, his mum.
Viola Davis is an incredible actress and I don’t think MJ could of chosen anyone more qualified. Davis has recently become the 16th member to reach EGOT status (given to people that have won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award).
Affleck explained during the SXSW conference, how this interaction went down: “He told me about his father, and then he talked about his mother. It was the first time I saw this look cross his face. It was a look of reverence, of awe, of love, and gratitude, and innocence.
“He said, ‘None of this would have ever happened without my mother.’ I said, ‘Who would you like to play your mum?’ He said, ‘Well, it has to be Viola Davis.”
Jordan’s wishes came true as the talented Viola Davis is indeed playing the role of his mom, Deloris Jordan.
Other’s that are playing a role in the new AIR film include more A-list actors such as Matt Damon, Marlon Wayans, and Jason Bateman.
For all the footwear enthusiasts and sports fans and anyone who’s curious about seeing this film can view AIR when it releases in cinemas on Wednesday, April 5.
