The World Cup winning captain splashed out some serious cash on 35 24-carat gold iPhones as gifts for his Argentina teammates and members of staff following their 2022 Qatar World Cup success.
Lionel Messi produced pure magic as he guided his nation to World Cup glory in December. His goalscoring form helped take Argentina through some difficult ties before beating France on penalties in one of the most entertaining World Cup finals we’ve ever seen.
The captain of Argentina wanted to honour his teammates and staff members with a personalised 24-carat gold smartphone to remember their success.
Messi spent £175,000 on getting 35 of the prestigious golden iPhones delivered to his Parisian estate. Take a closer look at what the personal mementos look like in the gallery below.
The PSG star got in contact with Ben Lyons, CEO of iDesign Gold to discuss designing the special set of gifts he had in mind for his World Cup winning team.
Ben explained to The Sun how the interaction went down: “Lionel is not only the GOAT but he’s one of iDesigns Gold’s most loyal customers and got in touch with us a couple of months after the World Cup final.
“He said he wanted a special gift for all the players and staff to celebrate the amazing win but didn’t want the usual gift of watches. So, I suggested gold Iphones inscribed with their names and he loved the idea.”
Each luxury phone features a similar design of each individual player’s name and national team shirt number and the text “World Cup Champions 2022” can be seen below the Argentina badge with the updated three stars (one for each World Cup win).
The manufacturers brand is also engraved on the bottom of the phone, along with the luxury service brand Patrick Group, although it’s unclear what their involvement was at this time.
Luxury golden goods seem to be getting more popular amongst footballers. Fellow PSG teammate Neymar was spotted with gold wireless earphones and Chelsea‘s Hakim Ziyech has also been spotted recently boasting a gold iPhone.
