Latest Jordan Release Sees Revival of ‘Grape’ Colourway

July 7th 2020 is the date set for the release of Air Jordan’s latest offering. The original release date was delayed due to the coronavirus outbreak, but sneakerheads won’t have to wait much longer to get their hands on the updated version of Michael Jordan’s signature shoe.  For this release, we’ll see the return of the Air Jordan 5 in an eye-catching ‘Grape-Ice’ design. Popularized by Will Smith in The Fresh Prince of Belair, ‘Grape’ is one of the all-time favourite colourways amongst Jordan fans and no doubt this attention-grabbing release will be no exception.

Featuring an all suede upper and striking emerald green accents on the midsole, tongue and lace locks, this release is set to be a head-turner. Other notable design features include a 3M reflective tongue, sleek black laces and a translucent outsole. The ‘Alternate Grape’ design also sees the ‘Jumpman’ logo on the heels in black, as opposed to the usual ‘23’ detailing.

The 2013 ‘Black Grape’ release has gained an average resale value of over $300 in the seven years since its launch and recently, a pair sold for $537 on StockX. So, if that release is anything to go off, the 2020 re-imaging of this colourway will be in high demand. Add into the equation the associated nostalgia with 90s comedy ‘The Fresh Prince of Belair’ and this release is sure to be an instant sell-out. In these unprecedented times, people are seeking comfort in nostalgia more than ever. And nothing say nostalgia quite like 90s Will Smith.

‘Alternate Grape’ is just one in a series of designs released in celebration of the Air Jordan 5’s 30th Anniversary. Originally designed in 1990 by Tinker Hatfield, the shoe was the first in the Air Jordan brand to feature a translucent outsole, reflective tongue elements and a moulded ankle collar. Other 30th anniversary releases we’ve seen so far this year include the ‘Fire Red 2020’ AJ5, inspired by the OG version that made their debut back in 1990. If the 30thanniversary releases of the classic silhouette weren’t sought after enough as it is, the added twist of 2020 becoming the year of a global pandemic adds an extra bit of history to this year’s releases.

Set to release on July 7th, the ‘Alternate Grape’ Air Jordan 5 will set you back £164.99 and be available to purchase from the Nike and Footlocker in the UK. This striking colourway is a commemorative release that’s not to be missed so don’t sleep on this one!
