Junya Watanabe Gives The North Face’s Nuptse a Patchwork Rework

He’s got close ties with Comme Des Garçons and a handsome collection of collaborations with Supreme, New Balance, Levis and more – now Junya Watanabe’s collaborative streak continues as he gives The North Face Nuptse jacket an updated patchwork design.

Born in Fukushima, Japan, Junya began his apprenticeship at Comme Des Garçons as a patternmaker, all the way back in 1984. He was promoted to chief designer of their Tricot knitwear line in 1987 and then upgraded to a key designer for the Comme Des Garçons Homme line.

Beginning in 1992, Junya began working under his own name as part of Comme Des Garçons, where he started his own line “Junya Watanabe Comme Des Garçons.”

He currently continues to work at Comme Des Garçons, where he has the creative freedom to carry on his own independent work and collaborations, with the newest one being the stunning The North Face Nuptse jacket (found below).

Junya Watanabe’s new The North Face Nuptse showcases one of the famed designer’s most popular deigns, his signature patchwork, which he incorporated into his Supreme collab in 2021.

Junya Watanabe and The North Face are longtime associates, it wasn’t that long ago when the duo came together and crafted The North Face’s most expensive hoodie yet.

The hoodie is priced at £550 and crafted with the eco-conscious “brewed protein” from Japanese textile company Spiber. The fabric aims to be the bridge between organic and manmade materials, something that’s easy on the environment. You can see a glimpse of Watanabe’s last year collab with Supreme and more recent The North Face hoodie below.

Junya’s patchwork Nuptse jacket has been crafted with layers of quiltlike military drab, resulting in one of The North Face‘s hardest Nuptse jackets we’ve ever seen.

Junya’s Nuptse puffer jacket is dropping Friday 18 November exclusively at Japanese retailer, ZOZO VILLA – making it a hard to get item. The jacket will be priced at ¥209,000 (approximately £1,300).

Junya’s collab with The North Face didn’t end up in his seasonal lookbook (found below) because the collaborative jacket is dropping as part of a series of collaborations designed to celebrate the Nuptse jacket’s 30th anniversary in 2022.

Don’t hesitate to head over to SEVENSTORE where you can get 15% off selected full price items from labels such as Comme Des Garçons, The North Face and lots more when using our exclusive discount code at the checkout: HOX15.

Junya Watanabe is one of this generations most decorated and accomplished designers and there isn’t many other designers The North Face could of called upon to start the winter festivities. I’ll be eagerly waiting to see what other collaborations make it into the celebrations of The North Face‘s Nuptse puffer jacket.
